What the heck is an App?

NEWS-31462-99601404ae0156d3b824f1217fc9673e

In January 2011, the American Dialect Society named “app” the word of the year for 2010.  But what the heck are they? But are those things sitting on our phones?

The word app is a noun, and it’s short for “application” which refers to any piece of software that works on a software system. The idea of an apps is that they harness the power of your machine and direct it to perform jobs that they are program for. For example, Microsoft Word is a desktop application that runs on either Windows or Mac OSX and its function is to process words.

In addition, web application allows application to be run directly through a web browser which itself is a desktop application. Eg. Google drive is a web application that runs via Chrome.

long before iphones, you probably have run application from a mobile phone such as notepad, calendar, web browser etc. These are mobile phone application which run on a less powerful system than those on your computer, they’re smaller and requires less resource to operates. As a result, mobile app often are stripped down version of their desktop or web application.

In 2008, Apple launched their online store where you can buy all sorts of these mobile phone applications specifically designed to run on the iPhone or iPad. They juiced it up a bit by referring to them as “apps” and the rest is history. As smartphone becomes more sophisticated, so as the apps and with over a MILLION apps out there in the market, accessing to information is just a tap away.
